History of our School

Behrman High School opened in 1931 as a co-educational facility with a student body of 1,700 pupils. Westbank students no longer had to cross the Mississippi River for secondary schooling. Since the school's opening in 1931, the configuration of the school has changed many times. Behrman has been an elementary-junior high school and a junior-senior high school. From 1964 to 1970 Behrman was a senior high school. Behrman became a high school, grades 7-8, in 1974, and in 1985 added the sixth grade to its middle school configuration. Martin Behrman was an elementary school with grades Pre-K through 6th from September 1987 to August 2005, when the infamous hurricane named Katrina ravaged New Orleans. The school sustained only minor damage and was chosen as a site for a new charter school, although its name was kept the same.

The Algiers Charter School Association founded Martin Behrman Charter Elementary School (PreK-8) in December of 2005, three months after the storm, to serve New Orleans residents who had returned to the city. Martin Behrman Charter Elementary School is located, in the historic Algiers Point neighborhood on the westbank of New Orleans. Martin Behrman now services children in grades Pre-K through 8th. Mrs. Rene Lewis-Carter serves as the Principal and Mr. Brian Young and Mrs. Cherie Goins are Assistant Principals.
