Mayor Martin Behrman
Our school is named after one of New Orleans' most popular former mayors, Martin Behrman, who was born in New York on October 14, 1864. Shortly afterwards his family moved to New Orleans where his father died. His mother supported the family by operating a dry goods stall in the French Market. Her death, when Martin was 12, marked the end of his formal schooling. A relative, who lived in Algiers and operated a retail grocery, took the youth in and gave him employment as a clerk.  Martin Behrman was an outstanding civic leader. He was a master politician and was elected mayor of the city. During his term in office, Behrman successfully guided New Orleans through a period of development and industrial expansion. He served longer than any other man as Mayor of New Orleans.
